Windows 8.1 review

So, windows 8.1 was supposed to be this giant success because it brought back the start menu. But no, they brought back the start button, not menu. They added a stupid button to take us back to that useless start screen? It's a slap in the face to be treated like a mouth breather who saves all their crap to the desktop. Please.

Will 8.2 bring back the start menu, or is this just me being forced to Linux? I'm only waiting for all my software to be Linux and I'm gone.

Rating = 0/10

Update: Ended up reverting back to windows 8.0 due to weird mouse-input lag bugs. Apparently in making certain things work better for tablets, stuff was broken in the process for regular computers. I'd give 8.1 a -5/10 rating.

How is that any different than what I do now? It's just hitting a button instead of the corner of the screen.

Honestly, I've come to see the Start Screen as the new Start Menu. I don't like it -- I think it's ridiculous and moronic for any app (Start Screen included) to take up the whole screen -- but it works okay for what I want.

Yeah, I fought with the new start screen for like an hour when I first got windows 8 and I just couldn't understand why I should bother fighting it. Reminds me of when I used to make .bat files for all my games back in the dos days, except half of the menu is pre-populated with junk I don't want and the other half is stuff windows discovered for me. Why build the start menu manually when it already exists? I am back to using classicshell and it works fine.

I suppose if I had a touch screen I wouldn't be so bothered by the start screen, and if I didn't already put a bunch of money into Steam I might try out the windows store, but as it is now, it's not for me.

It would be great if at some point all of the stores recognized purchases across the stores which would make me a lot more willing to try out various other store options, but I really don't see that happening.

I think it would be simple enough to let desktop users have a start menu and tablet/touch users do the start screen. Or make it transparent (I actually read somewhere that 8.1 can make the start screen transparent, which would make it more tolerable, but I spent 5 minutes or so looking for it. I have classic shell now, so alas...
